Regional beekeeping

Regional beekeeping

Beekeeping is one of the oldest and most developed economic sectors in our country. Today beekeeping in Russia is going through a stage of active development. There are many industrial enterprises as well as private farms that produce honey, wax, royal jelly, propolis for sale and for their own needs. Bee products are ubiquitous for food, medical treatment, cosmetics and dietary supplements. Private apiaries play an important role in Russian beekeeping: often the productivity and quality of the products there are much higher than in production. The prevalence of apiaries in certain regions depends on many factors, among which, first of all, climatic conditions favorable for both honey plants and bees. To one degree or another, in most Russian regions there are trees and herbs suitable for collecting nectar: linden, buckwheat, acacia, fruit crops. However, the leaders in the field of beekeeping are only a few regions, including the Republic of Bashkiria, the Volga region, Altai and Krasnodar Territories, the Far East.

There are several objective reasons for this: firstly, the favorable climate to which certain breeds of bees are adapted. The flora of these regions is rich in honey plants, many of which are medicinal, which means that their properties are transferred to the bee product. So, in the Far East, the most valuable honey plant, ginseng, grows, and the Altai and Bashkir bees collect nectar mainly from wild mountain and forest plants, in areas with a high level of ecology. These factors have favored the practice of beekeeping in these regions since ancient times, therefore, beekeepers there are extremely experienced, and knowledge of the organization of hives, keeping striped workers and the production of useful bee products is passed on from generation to generation.

One of the most important areas of Russian regional beekeeping is selection. The selection of bees is carried out with the aim of improving breeds, increasing productivity and resistance to infections.
