How to check honey at home
Honey is a unique, chemically complex product that can bring invaluable benefits to the body. However, at the same time, it must be of high quality. Unfortunately, the number of counterfeits in our market is large, so it is important to be able to check honey at home.
To be sure of the purchase, first of all, purchase honey from a trusted seller or in a specialized store. Avoid buying by hand, in markets, on the street. Too low a price should also alert. Before buying, inspect the jar: it must be hermetically sealed, and on the label, in addition to information about the manufacturer and the type of honey, the date of collection, as well as the GOST marking, must be stamped. It is better to take honey in a transparent jar – this way you can assess its appearance without violating the tightness of the package. The product must be homogeneous, clean, free of foreign inclusions, streaks or film on the surface. Small white spots or crystals are allowed – this is due to the large amount of natural sugar in the product.
How to check honey at home for freshness? Look for a dark liquid on the surface; its presence indicates long-term storage or violation of its conditions. But you should not be afraid of crystallized honey: its beneficial properties have not suffered at all. If possible, sniff and taste the honey before purchasing. High-quality honey has a pronounced natural taste and thick aroma. The taste of honey can vary depending on its type, from tart to sour, but any off-flavor is a sign that the product is diluted or tinted.
There are other ways to test honey at home. The easiest way is to dissolve a spoonful of the product in a glass of water. If the water becomes very cloudy or a precipitate forms, then there are impurities in the honey. You can heat a little honey in a water bath – a natural product gives off a strong characteristic smell. A drop of iodine added to the honey solution can also show the presence of “chemistry”. If the water turns yellow, this is normal; the manifestation of other shades indicates inadequate quality. In addition, you can drip a little vinegar into the solution: if foam goes, there is an admixture of chalk in the product.
Try rubbing a couple of drops of honey into the skin on the palm of your hand: a quality product is absorbed completely, a fake product leaves lumps. Do not neglect the tips on how to test honey at home, and choose a natural product!
